The two-star Locanda Carmel is a comfortable, family-run hotel located near the center of Trastevere (though far enough away to enjoy some peace and quiet).
Each of the Carmel's 10 rooms is decorated differently, though all rooms include traditional tiled floors, cream walls and furnishings that range from green sateen to raunchy red. Honestly, the décor is a little tired in places, but the Locanda Carmel more than makes up for it with its location and rates. Plus, rooms are large, clean and quiet and come with a fridge, air-conditioning, safe, TV and a private bathroom with hair dryer.
The hotel's hidden gem has to be the plant-filled rooftop terrace, which features a covered seating area. The Locanda Carmel does not serve breakfast, but you can buy a voucher for ?5 to use in a nearby bar. (However, it's probably cheaper to just go and buy a coffee and croissant at a café, which should cost around ?2.30.)
The hotel is a short walk from Piazza San Cosimato and the daily open-air morning market.

About the Hotel Locanda Carmel neighborhood
Perched on the western bank of the River Tiber just where it straddles Isola Tiberina, Trastevere ("across the Tevere," or Tiber) is known for its artsy demeanor and picturesque, winding streets. This historically working-class neighborhood is terribly cute, and hip to boot. It's characterized by earth-toned medieval buildings and stone walls just crawling with ivy. Plus, it offers easy access to the Centro Historico. Just keep in mind that Trastevere has been "discovered." The neighborhood features loads of tourist traps. Think Boho gone Soho. And while much of its tough, "authentic" Roman character remains, Trastevere is also now home to numerous trendy and touristy bars, cafes, shops, and restaurants. Nighttime crowds can make these postcard-perfect streets downright noisy. Despite all this, we can't help it. We love Trastevere just the same.
